A week after Holy Week, we got our little girl…Little girl puppy, that is. 
It’s the first time this house got a dog after a long time. Our last dog was Odie and that was when I was still single and unattached, plus my parents were still alive. He was our last because my mother would not allow another one. She said, “Who’s going to take care of it when you’re always away?” It was when my father already had the stroke and my mother was not really strong anymore. I was away on weekdays to work so all the responsibility of taking care of the house, my father, and the dog went to her. A dog was too hyper for her. Needless to say, I saw her point so I gave in. I’ve said this several times already after my parents passed away that I would get a dog again. It is only now that it has come true when I’ve got my own family.

Ladies and gents, presenting…ISAY. I gave her that name, after the place she came from, Talisay. She was already around two months old, though, with certain behaviors that we’re trying to “undo”. She tends to be aloof even of us and has a love-hate relationship with her primary human, my husband. When she does become playful, she can become too playful and treat us aggressively like non-humans.

More than a week ago, we got her a brother (well, brother until their relationship changes). The kids wanted to call him Augie so Augie it is. He is just a month old. Good thing Isay didn’t get jealous and was completely welcoming the other pup. Augie, on the other hand, is more friendly to humans. I present to you…AUGIE!!!!

Isay looks exactly like a dog I had in my early 20s. His name was Squirt and was a brat. He gad the same personality you describe. We made sure never to play “fight” with him and that tamed the aggression. He turned out to be the sweetest dog. Both your pups are beautiful. Wishing you many happy years together.

Thanks , Basil! Isay is quite aloof and we’re slowly trying to change that. When we succeed in getting her in the mood, however, she could be a little rough, so we’ll try to change that, too. She gets too rough on Augie especially, even if she’s just being friendly with him.

May I ask the breed of the dog you had that looked like Isay? Dogs in the Philippines are mostly, let’s just say for lack of a better term, multi-racial. You don’t really know from what breed they come from, normally. So I am curious about Isay’s possible breed. Augie’s, too, ’cause he looks like the “imported” ones people buy here for thousands. I don’t really care about buying imported dogs. Some have “racist” look at what we coined before as Asong Kalye (Street Dog) or Askals, now called Asong Pinoy (Filipino Dog) or Aspins, to be more politically correct. Why buy when you can ask for one for free? They will look good, too, if you take good care of them.

J.Gi., congratulations! Your new dogs look wonderful! And lovely family pics with them. Believe it or not, dogs can teach humans a lot of things. And they give unconditional love back. Puppies need to be trained not to be play aggressive, and they do learn! I had a rescue dog that was a crazy, out of control puppy, and today he’s an amazing service dog. Training is everything! Hang in there, it’ll get better. Christine

Yes, I believe it 🙂 I’ve had dogs before and they differed in “personalities,” but even the toughest of them wasn’t so tough with me (although that maybe because Doglas really grew up with us, unlike Isay who was already two-months-old, more or less, plus he almost died but my sister and I took very good care of him). Isay is slowly learning…Augie is the complete opposite. He’s very friendly to everyone! He needs to learn not to follow every person he sees!
